LIZ JOHNSON
Practitioner, Craniosacral Therapy

We would like to introduce you to one of our talented practitioners at 21st Century Medicine: Liz Johnson, our Craniosacral Therapist. Liz is trained in both the Upledger and Visionary Craniosacral Therapy and combines these approaches in her treatment. Here, Liz addresses a few questions regarding the therapy she provides.

What is Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy consists of light touch to regions of the body, beginning at the feet and releasing restricted energy up toward the head. The release of energy helps a person begin to deal with core issues on an emotional and physical level, restoring a feeling of balance and wholeness to the individual.

What is the medical understanding behind Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy works with the craniosacral system, which produces, circulates, and reabsorbs cerebrospinal fluid. This system maintains the environment in which the brain and nervous system develop and function. The fluid is in a constant rhythm, but when pressure builds up in an area, dysfunction and health problems arise. Craniosacral Therapy helps bring these fluids and energy back into balance and rhythm.

What is the holistic theory behind Craniosacral Therapy?
Craniosacral Therapy is based on the concept that emotional and physical aspects of a person are interrelated. Stress affects the mind and emotions, and if it is not properly dealt with at the time, it is stored in the body. When stress accumulates over a period of time, pressure builds up in the body on many levels or layers. Craniosacral Therapy works within a person’s energy field to help release this tension, gradually assisting in an individual’s own healing process. I believe people have a “map” within them that can help them return to inner and outer balance in their life.

What is your “rubber band analogy”?
I like to use the analogy of a rubber band to help people understand Craniosacral Therapy. A rubber band gets wound and twisted one way and another over time. Similarly, for a person, different things like stress, trauma, and illness happen over a lifetime, “twisting” a person emotionally and physically. Craniosacral Therapy is an unwinding process, gradually bringing healing and balance.
